Swire Cold Storage History

Swire Cold Storage History

From local supplier to global leader

Swire has been operating in Australia since 1855 and the group’s Australian cold storage businesses date back almost 100 years.

In 1956 Swire sought additional business opportunities in Australia and invested in Perishable Cargoes, a refrigerated transport business which operated cold stores in Sydney, Devonport and Burnie. A year later, an interest in Frig-Mobile Pty Ltd was acquired, expanding the company’s refrigerated fleet and cold store operations. The company became a fully owned subsidiary in 1967, by which time its name had been simplified to Frigmobile.

Further acquisitions followed. In 1970, Frigmobile purchased an interest in W. Woodmason Cold Storage, increasing its stake over the years until it became a fully owned subsidiary in 1988. In the meantime, Frigmobile’s business continued to grow, a milestone being the winning of a contract for the warehousing and delivery of foods throughout New South Wales for Woolworths in 1980.

The 1980s also saw Frigmobile develop an increasingly close relationship with the Adelaide-based South Australian Cold Stores, then a subsidiary of Metro Meats. This industry pioneer had an extremely long history in the industry having been established as London Road Cold Stores in 1915 and opening its first facility two years later. After a decade-long association, South Australian Cold Stores was acquired by John Swire & Sons in 1993.

In late 2002, John Swire & Sons Pty Ltd announced its biggest acquisition to date in Australia with the purchase of the majority of the assets of P. Cleland Enterprises in Western Australia and Victoria, a family-run logistics group founded in 1933. Then, in 2004, the group restructured its Australian cold storage and refrigerated transport businesses. These were consolidated under the Swire Cold Storage name, under which the Frigmobile and Cold Chain Logistics brands continue to operate.

Today, Swire Cold Storage is part of a global network and Australia’s leading cold chain logistics service provider, offering temperature-controlled warehousing, refrigerated transport and distribution services to a broad range of businesses.
